At Home in the Mountains

Amy Corcell is a flea market fan, a Craigslist connoisseur and a discount-website devotee. Decorating her home in the small mountain town of Cashiers, N.C., became a game to the stay-at-home mom. "What cheap piece could I score and what could I do with it to make it look fabulous?" says Amy.

Comfortable Style for the Family

Two of her friends, designers Hooper Patterson and Ann White Schutte, helped by scouring everything from country antiques fairs to big-name mall stores for Amy, her husband, Mike, and their three children. "We landed on the perfect mix of comfortable, colorful and completely one-of-a-kind."

Kitchen

The kitchen's star is its island, which can seat up to six. A carpenter made the island top from reclaimed barn wood, then painted it in a high-gloss gray to mimic the concrete counters. (For a similar look, try Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore.) The oak base is Forest Hills Green by Benjamin Moore.

Where Everyone Meets

Harrison, 5, Hayes, 4, and Camille, 2, eat all their meals there. "And when our friends come over, that's where we end up," says Amy. The high-back steel stools are from overstock.com ($170 for a set of 2).

Amy had this green fabric (Spicer in Celery, $40 a yard, lacefielddesigns.com) made into pillow covers and chair seats.

Unexpected Lighting

The paper-mache pendant light above the kitchen table is from West Elm.

Living Room

The white linen Robin Bruce sofa is "so comfortable, and it has a 10-year warranty on stains," says Amy. Hooper and Ann brought in color and pattern with a leopard-print ottoman and coral armchairs. To keep the built-in cubbies from looking cluttered with accessories, Amy filled some with just one item each.

A flea market steal at $10, this 1960s wood side table has a hammered copper top.

Additional Seating

The oak chairs by furniture company Gabby were reupholstered in coral velvet. Zincdoor.com has similar styles. Amy scooped up this kid-sized chair for just $4 on eBay.

Good Find

The upholstery was in good shape, so Amy kept the armchair, which cost about $500 at an auction, as is.

Boys' Bedroom

"We used to live in London, so that inspired the design," says Amy. She chose a navy, light blue and red color scheme and added some British accents. The striped wool rug is from HomeGoods, and the pine dresser is a flea market find and does double duty as a nightstand.

Bedding

The Union Jack pillow is from Etsy. Behind it is a flea market grain sack that Amy stuffed with a pillow. The headboards are from Target and were less than $100 each. Pine Cone Hill red cotton throws brighten up the L.L.Bean striped duvets.

Master Bedroom

Amy went all out with blue and white to make her bedroom feel serene. She layered the space with a mix of patterns, including a diamond-print upholstered X-bench, coral-patterned curtains framing the bed and an oversized quatrefoil rug. The ceiling is painted Kentucky Haze by Benjamin Moore.

Vanity Area

Across from the Noir bed sits an old Target desk-turned-vanity, draped in more blue and white, a lattice-print fabric from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft. The focus stays on this table's fun fabric, thanks to a Lucite chair from overstock.com.

Canopy Fabric

The canopy is heavy cotton from Artee Fabrics and Home, a local fabric store. Find a similar look at joann.com.

Mixing Patterns

Great spot for an X-bench! This patterned one cost $80 at HomeGoods. Hooper and Ann found this big, bold wool rug at shadesoflight.com.

Sitting Space

The room needed solid pieces, so Hooper and Ann snagged these linen chairs for about $350 each from overstock.com.

Playroom

"The kids love to draw and paint, so we wanted this room to be bright and fun," says Amy. The table was made from a wood tabletop the Corcells already had — it's screwed to fence posts that were cut down to kiddie height. The Ektorp sofa from IKEA has easy-to-remove cotton slipcovers that can go in the wash.
